Graphics
For many years, RPGs were at the back of the graphics train. All the first-person shooters and side-scrolling action games would snag accolades for the most beautiful graphics and art work. With the advent of much more powerful computers, RPG developers have the ability to give their games an immersive quality that comes from a breathtaking array of animations and artwork. However, the beauty of this game does come at a small price, and that is computing power. I played Dungeon Siege on a dual 867 G4 with 1 GB of RAM and a Geforce 4 TI 4400 graphics card. I set all of the details to a medium setting, and popped my resolution up to a comfortable 1024x768. At these settings, the game played very smoothly except when I was zoomed out all the way, and there were a ton of sprites on the screen. Other than those few slow downs, the game's graphics, especially watching individual arrows from your archer stick into enemies, are outstanding, but a relatively beefy machine is required to glean all the detail and power from the graphics.
Sound
While not an all-important aspect to the game, sound adds the ambience to the world, allowing for a more complete atmosphere. Wolves howl in the distance, wind rushes through trees, and the sound of steel on steel or a spell caster muttering an arcane incantation are all parts of the Dungeon Siege universe. As well as the ambient sound effects, the occasional townsfolk or trader you meet will talk to you with voice acting that isn't half bad. The sound enhances the game, taking the world that has already been crafted by the developers and adding a flare of realism and excitement that can only come from well-produced and implemented sound effects.
Conclusion
For those Macintosh gamers who have already bored themselves with Diablo 2, and are waiting with anticipation for Neverwinter Nights, this game is perfect. With at least 60+ hours in the single player game, and a relatively endless number of hours in multiplayer action, Dungeon Siege is a wonderful game to buy and enjoy. If you are a fan of the RPG, definitely check this game out, and if you have never so much hefted a sword in your entire video game career, Dungeon Siege is an excellent opportunity for you to learn what all these "experience" points are about.
