Sound
The sound design for this game is exceptional, as sound is an important aspect of game play. An obvious implication of sound in R6:RS is choosing whether or not to use silenced weapons. Silenced weapons do less damage, but non-silenced weapons alert others to your location. A helpful hint is to not mix weapon types within a team. Your team should either be entirely silenced or don’t even bother. The amount of noise you make while moving can also alert terrorists to your presence. The amount of noise you make depends on your movement speed, any injuries, and the surface being traversed. My only complaint is that is sometimes difficult to determine where sounds originate from; specifically terrorist footsteps. Finally the score is given a beautiful score by Bill Brown; an individual who goes greatly unrecognized for his contributions to the field.

Graphics
Rainbow Six was never a bad looking game, but lets just say that it wouldn’t have been the first girl invited to a jr. high prom either. All of that has changed with R6:RS. Powered by Epic’s Unreal Engine, R6:RS easily looks as good as any other game on the market right now. The maps are brilliantly realized, the character models look great, and animations are very fluid. The use of the Unreal Engine has also corrected several of the annoying clipping problems that plagued the series in the previous releases.

The game ran extremely well on my PowerBook G4 (1 GHz, 512 MB, NVIDIA GeForce FX) and comparatively as well on similar, but less powerful, G4s it was networked with for LAN play. However seeing this game on a G5 may have convinced me that I need to upgrade. It was so fluid and beautiful that it is hard to describe. Definitely no complaints in this category.

Value
This is a solid game that will certainly deliver your money’s worth. While you can blow through the single player missions in under a week’s time, attempting to perfect mission plans and going on solo terrorist hunts will keep you occupied. Multiplayer scenarios simply take this game to higher level.

Closing Comments
This game is a logical evolution from previous Rainbow Six releases and that disappoints me slightly. While this is an outstanding release, there is no real innovation to it. Additionally, I am forced to wonder why some of the innovations that were developed for Ghost Recon weren’t incorporated; specifically the RPG elements of character development. However that isn’t much more than food for thought. The good news is that while this is a title not to be missed, there is a lot of room for future sequels to grow and become distinctive games in their own right.
