AGE: OK, so I‚m getting older every day. But I was still able to mop up the floor with Lucian's Generation Y digital corpse after I popped holes into him all day, so I refuse to blame my aging reflexes.

PERFORMANCE: Ah ha!! NOW we're talking. It's hard to hit a target moving at 60 FPS when you can only track them at 12 FPS. Granted, I made those numbers up, but it gets a point across. UT2003 is stunning to look at, but unless your machine has serious muscles ready to roar under the hood, be prepared to crank down the visual effects to their lowest settings just to get a bare minimum of a playable game. Now I'm not going to lower the game's score for this -- I mean, just because your 1985 Mac Plus can't play something doesn't make the game suck, but it is important to note that the gameplay will be more enjoyable on a higher end system. In fact, I may have to shelve this title until I get my G5, at which point I'll be sure to make it one of the first games I install on my as-of-yet- nonexistant system.

Let There Be Sound
OK, I gotta mention the audio, don't I? It's lovely. The music is pulsating and appropriate to the game, explosions are loud and earth shaking, the flak cannon no longer sounds like an aluminum can being crushed, and the voice acting, while it may not stretch the boundaries of dramatic skill, is well done. I truly believe the actors when they say, "The flag carrier is here!". In other words, I can't say the audio truly wowed me, but it is certainly very well done, so zero complaints here. And sometimes the best audio is the kind that adds to the story and feel of a game without drawing too much attention to itself.

Extras
It should be noted that this game has been out for the PC for several months, and a couple of free expansion packs have been released for it. These are included in the Mac version, and basically offer new maps and a couple of new gameplay modes (like invasion, in which UT morphs with that classic game Xenophobe -- just shoot at all the alien bugs that come at you). These maps are all downloadable, but it's nice to have them on a CD nonetheless. And the game has lots of built-in mods -- from instagib to low gravity -- that can be added to any game for a huge amount of variety.

And The Nutshell, Please
What's there to say about this game? It's not groundbreaking, it's not original -- but it's one fantastic sequel! If you like the genre, if you like the previous games, and if your machine can handle the pressure, this is a must-have multiplayer FPS. With lots of gameplay modes, scores of downloadable maps, hundreds of free servers online and spectacular eye candy, you can't go wrong. It'll be keeping me busy until the day UT2004 bangs down my door.
